Spinal fusion represents one of the most expensive inpatient surgeries performed in the US, with providers receiving an estimated $8 billion in payments in 2015 according to Definitive Healthcare data. It’s also one of the treatments covered under CMS’ Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BCPI) initiative, a retrospective bundled payment system designed to promote better outcomes and reduce costs. The following list contains the top 20 BCPI participants with the lowest average per-episode spending for spinal fusion procedures and at least 25 episodes in 2015.
The top 20 hospitals include facilities with a wide variety of characteristics. Total episode counts ranged from 27 at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center and St Vincent Infirmary Medical Center’s 516, the third highest among all BCPI participants. Case mix and bed size, characteristics often associated with spending and outcomes, also varied considerably.
