The following lists contain the top 20 physician procedures billed to Medicare in 2015 by total volume and total payments nationwide, based on Definitive Healthcare data.
Routine office visits (CPT codes 99211-99215) are the most common and heavily reimbursed of all physician procedures, numbering close to 220 million with total Medicare payments of over $12.8 billion in 2015, according to Definitive Healthcare data. Inpatient care visits (CPT codes 99231-99236) followed with a total of 78.5 million cases and nearly $4.8 billion in reimbursements. Optical procedures requiring specialized care also ranked among those with the highest reimbursement levels. Cataract removal, eye examinations, and delivery of macular degeneration drugs through optical injections all received payments exceeding $100 per case.
