2013-01-28 – MUSC Names Dr. Patrick Cawley Hospital CEO

After a nationwide search and unanimous board of trustees approval, Dr. Patrick Cawley, formerly the chief medical officer of the Medical University Hospital Authority (MUHA), has accepted the position of Vice President of Clinical Operations and Executive Director. He replaces recently retired CEO and VP of Clinical Operations Stuart Smith. An interim medical director appointment is forthcoming. A constant champion of MUSC Excellence initiatives and a leader in quality and safety measures, Cawley will also remain an associate professor of medicine at MUSC.

Cawley was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania where he attended Scranton Preparatory School and graduated with honors from the University of Scranton. He received his doctor of medicine degree from Georgetown University, an MBA from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and completed an internal medicine residency at Duke University. He is board certified in internal medicine and was named a Master in Hospital Medicine by the Society of Hospital Medicine. He is a certified physician executive through the American College of Physician Executives and a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is a fellow in the Liberty Fellowship Program and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. He has been named one of America’s Best Doctors®.

Cawley co-founded the first hospital medicine program at Duke University and later managed a private practice hospital medicine group in Conway, South Carolina. He is a past-president of The Society of Hospital Medicine, the fastest growing medical specialty society in the United States.

Cawley has worked in both academic and nonacademic hospitals and has served as a consultant to numerous hospitals in hospital medicine program development. He is a frequent lecturer on the competitive advantages of hospitalist programs as well as implementation of patient safety and quality programs in hospitals. In his role as the medical director, Cawley was responsible for the quality and safety of all patient care programs as well as direct oversight of clinical service lines. Prior to this position, he served as section chief of hospital medicine and Vice Chairman of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Medicine at MUSC.

Cawley lives in Mount Pleasant, SC with his wife and three children.
