2013-02-04 – Beth Israel Deaconess Med Center Names Nancy Formella COO
Nancy Formella, RN, FACHE, a 14-year veteran of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock health system, has been named Chief Operating Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Formella most recently served as Executive Advisor to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Boards of Trustees and is previous President of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital and Co-President of Dartmouth-Hitchcock in Lebanon, NH. She will assume her role as COO of the Medical Center in mid-March.
“We had great candidates from all over the country, and it was clear to us that Nancy’s strong proven track record of day-to-day hospital management and robust health system development made her the perfect fit for Beth Israel Deaconess,” said BIDMC President and CEO Kevin Tabb, MD.
“Nancy Formella shares our commitment to providing high quality patient care within a complex academic medical center, and we’re thrilled to have her join us,” added Stephen B. Kay, Chair of the BIDMC Board of Directors.
“Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s strong reputation for clinical excellence, extraordinary research and teaching, and innovation in our complex health care environment drove my desire to join this renowned medical center,” said Formella. “BIDMC is particularly known for having extremely talented nursing staff, physicians, technicians, support staff, researchers and administrators, and I am looking forward to working with all of them.”
In her various roles, Formella supported the regional relationship-building efforts launched when she was Co-President of Dartmouth-Hitchcock, composed of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, a 396-bed rural academic medical center, and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic, a 1,200-member integrated physician group practice serving more than 1.5 million patients in Northern New England. As a trustee and an executive, Formella played a key role in the creation of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health, a health system structure that allows regional providers to strategically partner together to deliver coordinated care and improve the health of the communities the network serves.
Formella joined Dartmouth-Hitchcock in 1999 as Senior Nurse Executive and in this role she restructured the division of nursing to ensure practice, education and research support for professional nursing practice. Through her leadership she also reinvigorated a shared governance model for nursing practice, offering a collaborative approach for nurses to be part of change and improvements leading to better patient outcomes, culminating in Dartmouth-Hitchcock being designated by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as the 95th Magnet organization for Nursing Excellence in the United States.
Prior to joining Dartmouth-Hitchcock, Formella worked as a senior clinical consultant for CSC Healthcare/APM Management, a national healthcare consulting firm and for almost 15 years prior to that she held various leadership roles in the Mayo Health System, both in Rochester, MN, and Jacksonville, FL.
Formella succeeds Marsha Maurer, RN, who has been Interim COO since January 2012. Maurer will resume her previously held position at the medical center as Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer.
“Without hesitation, Marsha stepped up when we needed her,” said Tabb. “We are thankful for her service and honored to have her back at the helm of patient care, where her leadership has been a guiding force in virtually everything we do.”
