2013-06-28 – Avista Adventist Hospital Names Dennis Barts CEO
Dennis Barts has been named chief executive officer of Avista Adventist Hospital in Louisville and is scheduled to start on Monday, July 22.
Barts will take over the top job at the 114-bed hospital from John Sackett, who resigned to take the job of president at the 331-bed Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Maryland.
Moving to Colorado gives Barts the chance to be closer to his grown-up children and grandchild, as well as the opportunity to work for his church, Barts said in a press statement announcing his departure as chief executive from Valley Hospital, a 123-bed facility in Spokane, Washington.
Barts’ last day in his current job is scheduled to be Friday, July 5. He was named chief executive of Valley Hospital in 2009.
During Barts’ term as chief executive, Valley Hospital received Joint Commission recognition as a Center of Excellence in Total Joint Surgery. The hospital also received “top hospital” recognition for surgical and pneumonia care from the nonprofit rating group. The Joint Commission is headquartered in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois.
Prior to Valley Hospital, Barts served as chief executive at hospitals in Ponca City, Oklahoma; Jourdanton, Texas; and Fallbrook, California. He has a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan; a master’s degree in exercise physiology from Iowa State University; and a master’s of business administration degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Avista is a member of Centura Health, a faith-based, nonprofit health-care network. The Centura network includes 14 hospitals, seven senior living facilities, medical clinics, affiliated partner hospitals, the Flight for Life Colorado helicopter service and home-care and hospice services in Colorado and in Kansas.
