The Kansas City Star reports Prime Healthcare Services has completed the acquisition of St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City and St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs.

The for-profit hospital chain based in California also acquired some other unspecified assets of Carondelet Health from Ascension Health, the St. Louis-based not-for-profit company that has owned and operated the hospitals.

These new acquisitions mean Prime Healthcare now owns four hospitals in the Kansas City area, as the health system purchased Providence Medical of Kansas City and St. John Hospital in Leavenworth in 2013.

The three Carondelet Health long-term care facilities — Carondelet Manor, Villa Saint Joseph and St. Mary’s Manor — are not part of the sale. They, along with the hospitals’ charitable foundations, remain part of Ascension.

Prime Healthcare, a 5,224-bed health system and the nation’s fastest-growing hospital chain is currently affiliated with 38 hospitals.
