So far in 2018, Definitive Healthcare tracked more than 1,030 announcements of temporary and permanent facility closures, program terminations, and department shutdowns. In the following list, we compiled the 25 most recent announcements of hospital and care facility closures. Three of the shuttered hospitals operated in Ohio, and both Massachusetts and Oklahoma saw two facilities shut their doors this year.
The causes of facility closures are varied, though most involve low or inconsistent patient traffic and financial insecurity. For Bay Area Regional Hospital, based in California, rumors swirled that the facility owed more than $43 million to payers Aetna and Cigna. Other facilities, such as Renown Skilled Nursing Facility, faced challenges in recruiting and retaining qualified clinical staff. Some, like Embrace Women’s Health Clinic, closed due to poor performance.
There were nearly 100 reports of facility closings due to natural disasters, including Hurricanes Michael and Florence. Dozens of facilities faced damage from the storms, such as flooding and compromised structural integrity. Though many of those facilities eventually re-opened, other, like Florida Hospital Oceanside, was demolished due to excessive damage.
