According to Definitive Healthcare’s Commercial Claims platform, the most common cardiac procedure at surgery centers is a coronary artery bypass graft (CPT code 33533). Nearly 4,000 procedures were reported across the U.S. in 2017, with an average cost of more than $6,000 per procedure. Coronary bypass grafts took four of the top 25 spots, totaling nearly 8,000 individual procedures.
Angioplasties, including stent and shunt placements, are also common, taking seven of the 25 spots on the list. Balloon angioplasties are among the most popular procedures, as they are minimally invasive and can be performed without open surgery.
The most expensive cardiac procedure at a surgery center is the “revascularization and atherectomy of femoral, popliteal artery with stent” (CPT 37227), with average charge of over $33,000 per procedure. The second most-expensive procedure, “atherectomy of femoral, popliteal artery” (CPT 37225), was more than $11,000 cheaper on average.
