The top hospitals using Epic Systems’ EHR

Founded in 1979, Epic Systems Corporation consistently ranks as one of the largest electronic health record (EHR) systems in the U.S.
Of the more than 9,300 hospitals tracked in our HospitalView product, Epic EHRs are currently installed in 2,814 hospitals, which accounts for nearly 40% of the overall inpatient EHR market share.
Epic’s closest competitors are Oracle Cerner and MEDITECH, holding approximately 23% and 13% of the market share respectively, but Epic Systems still holds a healthy advantage in the EHR solutions industry.
Which hospitals are using Epic Systems inpatient EHR?
Although there are many proven EHR platforms available, our intelligence shows that Epic consistently remains the market leader in inpatient EHR installations year-over-year. While Epic is clearly the leading vendor for managing inpatient care at hospitals, its software is also popular in ambulatory settings. As of writing, Epic’s ambulatory offering is ranked second for the number of installs and holds about 10% of the market share.
Below, we use intelligence from the Atlas Technology Install Dataset to explore the top hospitals currently leveraging Epic Systems’ EHRs. We’ll analyze two different metrics: the number of beds and net patient revenue.

What are the hospitals using Epic’s EHR with the most beds?
Advent Health Orlando is the hospital with the most staffed using Epic’s EHR products. The facility has 2,247 staffed beds, according to the most recent 12-month interval tracked in our database.
In second place is Baptist Medical Center with 1,451 staffed beds. Montefiore Hospital comes in slightly behind in third place with 1,410 beds.
The number of beds available is a good metric to measure the size of a hospital as it’s a key indicator of how many patients a hospital can care for.
Interestingly, all the top hospitals based on the number of beds leveraging an Epic EHR are part of a broader health system or integrated delivery network (IDN). Having the same EHR across all the hospitals in a health system enhances interoperability to aid in exchanging patient data between different facilities.

New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center ranks number one on our list with a total NPR of $7,691,623,214, according to the most recent 12-month interval tracked in our database.
In second place is Tisch Hospital with a net patient revenue of about $6.6 billion. Cleveland Clinic Main Campus ranks in third place, slightly behind with an NPR of about $6.2 billion.
Net patient revenue is another key metric to measure the size of a hospital, as it represents a hospital’s financial strength.
Why do hospitals use Epic EHR?
Though there are many proven technologies in the market, Epic has maintained its popularity over the years, particularly with large health systems and hospitals.
This could be in part due to its integration capabilities. Epic hosts a suite of in-house developed healthcare solutions that communicate well with one another on the Epic App Orchard. Users are not limited to clinical record-keeping. Epic solutions can also handle registration, patient scheduling, billing, and more.
Such features, backed by over 40 years of industry reputation, make Epic a titan in the EHR market.
Though EHR software from competitors may also have these features, a legacy like this can self-perpetuate a brand’s success.
How many hospitals moved to Epic in 2023?
According to news reports from Becker’s Hospital Review, approximately 17 hospitals and health systems have publicly announced they are transitioning to Epic’s EHR system since January 2023.
