Top hospitals performing the most pancreas transplants
Pancreas transplant procedures are typically performed to treat patients with type 1 diabetes (often along with a kidney transplant), although they may also be used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and various cancers. Pancreas transplants are less common than those of other organs, such as kidney, liver, and heart transplants, due largely to the limited availability of pancreas donors.
According to procedure claims data reported by 79 U.S. hospitals in our Atlas All-Payor Claims Dataset, nearly 600 pancreas transplants were performed across the country in 2023. Below, we’ve listed the top hospitals that performed the most pancreas transplants in 2023.

Which hospital performed the most pancreas transplants in 2023?
Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California, performed 7.2% of all pancreas transplant procedures in 2023, the highest volume reported in the U.S. that year. This hospital reported a 42% higher volume of pancreas transplants than the runner-up, Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Several hospitals on this list also reported particularly high volumes of other organ transplants. While taking 9th place for pancreas transplant volumes in 2023, Piedmont Atlanta Hospital performed the most heart transplants that year, as well as 3.1% of all kidney transplants and 5.5% of liver transplants.
