Top 10 hospitals by number of patient discharges

A hospital discharge happens when you leave a hospital after treatment. A hospital can discharge a patient if they feel that they no longer need inpatient care and can go home or if the patient needs to be transferred to a different facility.

Using Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView product, we created a list of the U.S. hospitals with the highest number of patient discharges. The following data is displayed and ranked according to the most recent 12-month interval tracked in our database.

Which hospitals have the most discharges?

The hospital with by far the most patient discharges is AdventHealth Orlando, located in Orlando, Florida. This facility is one of the largest by number of staffed beds and discharged 130,555 patients in the 12 months that we measured. AdventHealth Orlando is the largest hospital in Florida and is ranked as the #1 hospital in Orlando by U.S. News and World Report.

The hospital with the second highest number of discharges is NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, located in New York City. This facility saw 108,714 discharges in our analysis. This facility provides emergency, primary, and specialty care in every field of medicine and is centrally located in the largest city in the country. These two reasons might explain why this facility sees so many discharges.

The third-place hospital is Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center, also located in Orlando, Florida. This facility saw 100,569 discharges in the 12 months that we measured. Orlando Regional Medical Center is the flagship facility for the Orlando Health System and also has the only level 1 trauma center in central Florida.

Why are discharge levels important to a hospital?

Hospital discharges are a metric that indicates the volume of patients that that hospital sees on an annual basis. This metric can be used to compare the number of beds, size, and total costs in order to better understand staffing, clinical workload, and financial issues on a day-to-day basis.
