What are the largest U.S. hospitals by bed count?

In our HospitalView product, we track more than 9,000 hospitals and integrated delivery networks (IDNs). HospitalView offers access to comprehensive facility profiles including information on staffed beds, bed utilization rate, average length of stay, common procedures, and more.

These types of healthcare market datapoints help Definitive Healthcare clients identify the right facilities to market to, as well as better segment and target their key hospital accounts.

In this Healthcare Insight, we compiled the following list of U.S. hospitals with the most beds. We used the total number of staffed beds metric to determine the biggest hospitals. The results in this analysis are sourced from the Medicare Cost Report and represent data from the most recent 12-month interval tracked in our database.

What is the largest hospital in the U.S. by beds?

According to our data, New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center is the largest hospital in the U.S. by bed count, with about 2,850 beds.

AdventHealth Orlando ranks in second place with 2,787 staffed beds and is also a top hospital by net patient revenue. It is owned by the IDN AdventHealth, one of the largest health systems in the U.S. by both net patient revenue and number of hospitals.

According to the most recent Medicare Cost Report, AdventHealth Orlando has a bed utilization rate of 80.6%. Bed utilization measures the percentage of beds or units that are occupied on an average night over a given period of time. It can also be an indicator of how effectively a hospital manages its resources and provides care to patients. Patients at AdventHealth Orlando have an average length of stay of five days.

In third place is Methodist Hospital, located in San Antonio, TX. The facility has 1,785 staffed beds.

How many beds does the biggest hospital in the U.S. have?

If we define ‘biggest’ as ‘facility size,’ then Creedmoor Psychiatric Hospital is the largest hospital in the U.S., with a total facility square footage of nearly 9.5 million square feet. Creedmoor Psychiatric Hospital has 349 staffed beds.

Compared to the largest hospitals on the list above with more than 1,000 patient beds, Creedmoor has a relatively small bed size. As a psychiatric hospital designed to help patients with severe mental health conditions, patients likely have larger room sizes than a short-term acute care hospital. The facility has a bed utilization rate of 87.4% and an average length of stay of 612 days, according to Definitive Healthcare data.
