Top 10 IDNs by number of staffed beds
Integrated delivery networks (IDNs) are a critical component of the U.S. healthcare industry. An IDN, or health system, is an owner and operator of healthcare facilities, such as ambulatory surgery centers, hospitals, imaging centers and hospices.
“Staffed beds” is a way to measure the number of beds a healthcare facility has. The more staffed beds, the more patients a healthcare facility can care for. Like total facility area, “staffed beds” measures the size of a facility and indicates healthcare facilities’ capabilities and capacity.
We compiled a list of the top 10 IDNs by the number of staffed beds below.

Which IDN had the highest number of staffed beds?
HCA Healthcare was the IDN with the most staffed beds– coming in at a whopping 41,649. This puts HCA Healthcare at about 49% more staffed beds than the second-ranked IDN, the Department of Veterans Affairs, which has 25,384.
As the number one-ranked IDN for total facility area and net patient revenue, HCA Healthcare’s ranking on this list comes as no surprise. Their facility size alone allows them the capacity to house a much greater number of staffed beds.
Furthermore, along with HCA Healthcare, our list notes that two other Tennessee IDNs made the top 10 ranking. Once again, this is of little surprise as many consider Nashville to be among the nation’s largest healthcare hubs with its diverse amalgamation of healthcare leaders and unique specializations.
