Which hospital has the most facility square footage? 

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of Los Angeles has the most facility square footage, with 3,745,428. Second on the list is Santa Clara Valley Medical Center of San Jose, with 3,438,172. The third is Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, with 2,689,018. 

A few of the hospitals on the list, including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and University of California Davis Medical Center, made the list of best hospitals in California. In addition, both children’s hospitals rank in the top five best children’s hospitals in California. The prestige of these hospitals may increase demand for their services and thus create a need for more space in their facilities.  

Across the top 10 hospitals, there is a total of 22,769,144 facility square feet, with an average of 2,276,914. 

What is a short-term acute care hospital? 

80% of the hospitals on the list are short-term acute care hospitals. In fact, 47% of the hospitals that Definitive Healthcare tracks are short-term acute care hospitals.  

Short-term acute care hospitals care for patients presenting with short-term injuries or illnesses. Healthcare providers typically offer treatment in either brief inpatient visits or outpatient visits. This type of hospital is the “standard” for hospitals in the U.S., as they are the most common type.
