Which U.S. hospitals see the most patients for surgical care?

Surgery is a remarkable feat of human ingenuity. From ancient trephination to modern robotic procedures, the field of surgical care has come a long way over the centuries. Today, surgery is an essential component of healthcare, significantly enhancing the lives of millions of people across the globe each year.

Using data from our Atlas All-Payor Claims Dataset, we’ve compiled a list of top U.S. hospitals for surgical care based on the region in which patients live, also known as patient origination. In other words, these are the hospitals most patients in the region visited for surgical care in 2022.

Healthcare providers can use patient origination data to gain insights into the preferences and behaviors of patients in different regions, such as the likelihood of traveling for care. Keep reading to see which hospitals topped the list for each region in the U.S.

What is patient origination analysis?

Patient origination analysis looks at the origins of patients who seek medical care from a hospital or healthcare facility. This intelligence breaks down where an organization’s patients are from, providing analytical context to specific populations’ care needs and choices. With patient origination intelligence, healthcare providers can better understand their patient populations, develop new services or facilities, and optimize their outreach efforts.

What is the most common surgery in the U.S.?

Surgical care can involve a wide range of procedures, from minimally invasive surgeries like laparoscopic appendectomy, to complex surgeries like lung transplants. The most common inpatient surgical procedures in U.S. hospitals in 2022 were:

  • Arterial catheterization (AC) or cannulation for sampling, monitoring, or transfusion. Accounting for 5.5% of total surgical procedures, ACs are often inserted to closely monitor blood pressure and facilitate frequent blood sampling in surgical and critically ill patients.
  • Obstetrical care was the second-most common surgical procedure in the U.S., with 3.2% of total surgical procedures. Obstetrical care refers to all antepartum care, vaginal delivery, and postpartum care.
  • Insertion of a central venous access catheter (CVC) rounded out the top three, with 3.0% of total inpatient surgical procedures. CVCs are often inserted to administer certain medications, augment hemodynamic monitoring, and provide venous access when peripheral access is limited.
