What does the number of staffed beds say about a facility?

A staffed bed is defined as a bed maintained for lodging adult, pediatric, or newborn ICU patients within a hospital’s acute, long-term, or domiciliary area.

As a metric, staffed beds roughly indicate the number of patients a healthcare facility can care for. Typically, the more staffed beds, the more patients a healthcare facility can support, although patients with specific needs may require lodging in specialized areas within a facility. A hospital’s ability to staff beds may fluctuate based on the availability of locum tenens providers during staffing shortages

Along with metrics like total facility area, staffed beds can provide insight into a facility’s size, capabilities, and capacity.
