Top 25 physician groups by the number of locations

In today’s shifting healthcare landscape, physician groups continue to play an important role in the care continuum as they offer an alternative location to visiting a hospital for care.

What is a physician group?

A physician group refers to one or more physicians operating as an organization to provide care. They typically provide outpatient care rather than inpatient care services like you may receive in a hospital.

Physician groups are traditionally smaller than a hospital and tend to focus on a single specialty, giving them more flexibility in terms of service offerings, operating hours and geographical coverage.

Physician groups may be associated with a larger integrated delivery network, or they may be operate as an independent entity.

The Definitive Healthcare PhysicianGroupView product tracks over 126,000 physician groups. Below is a list of the top 25 physician groups by the number of locations.

Which physician group has the most locations?

Select Physical Therapy tops the list with over 1,880 locations within the United States.  Headquartered in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, Select Physical Therapy operates locations across the country in 39 states and Washington, D.C.

In second place is Beaumont Health Physicians with 1,575 locations. Unlike Select Physical Therapy, Beaumont Health Physicians tends to operate primarily in Michigan where the organization is headquartered.

Rounding out the top three is ATI Physical Therapy with over 900 locations. ATI Physical Therapy operates across 25 states with its headquarters residing in Illinois.

Physician groups that specialized in family practice or internal medicine make up the majority of the list. However, physician groups that specialize in physical therapy make up the majority of the top three largest physician groups by the number of locations.

Does the number of group practice members impact the number of locations for physician groups?

The number of physicians and the number of group practice members (which includes both physicians and non-physicians such as nurses, physical therapists, social workers and others) does not appear to impact the number of locations a physician group has.

For example, ATI Physical Therapy, which comes in third based on the number of locations, has less than half the number of group practice members as number nine Northwell Health Physician Partners.

The location of a physician group can have one provider working out of them or they can have multiple providers working out of the same location, which may account for the discrepancy. Groups with more locations but fewer group practice members likely have small individual practice locations with one or two providers operating out of each location.
