Top 10 physician groups by the number of locations
Physician groups remain integral to the care continuum, serving as both frontline access points for routine care and specialized partners within larger health systems. Whether operating independently or within hospitals, these groups help expand access, manage costs, and deliver care across a wide range of settings.
What is a physician group?
The definition of a “physician group” can vary across organizations, and there is no universally accepted definition. For this article, Definitive Healthcare defines a physician group as one or more physicians operating as an organization to provide patient care. These groups are not otherwise classified under other firm types.
While many groups focus on outpatient services, such as primary care, internal medicine, or physical therapy, others, particularly those in specialties like anesthesiology, emergency medicine, and radiology, are embedded within hospital settings and play a critical role in inpatient care.
Physician groups vary widely in size, scope, and ownership. Some operate independently, while others are part of larger integrated delivery networks (IDNs), health systems, or backed by private equity firms. Additionally, some are supported by management services organizations (MSOs), which typically do not own the clinical entity itself but may own or manage the group's facilities, infrastructure, and non-clinical operations. This diversity in structure influences how they scale, negotiate with payers, and coordinate care across settings.
