HCA Healthcare is one of the largest health systems in the country. Based in Nashville, TN, HCA Healthcare has a net patient revenue (NPR) of over $49 billion and staffs over 41,000 beds across its network. The integrated delivery network (IDN) is so large, in fact, that approximately 5% of all hospital services performed each year in the U.S. are delivered at an HCA facility.

What does HCA stand for?

In the context of this blog, HCA stands for the Health Corporation of America, which was founded in 1968. HCA Healthcare was one of the first health systems in the country and has since founded HCA hospital locations across 19 states and the United Kingdom.

Which HCA hospitals have the highest NPR?

Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas ranks number one on our list of the top HCA hospitals with an NPR of over $2.2 billion. This facility has increased its NPR by 16.4% since its previously reported financial year and scores within the 98th percentile on Definitive Healthcare’s financial strength dashboard. Seen within HospitalView, the financial strength dashboard measures a hospital’s financial performance against other hospitals tracked in the Definitive Healthcare platform.

Mission Hospital - Memorial Campus comes in second on our list with an NPR of nearly $1.3 billion. This hospital is located in Asheville, North Carolina, and has increased its NPR by 2.6% since its previously reported financial year. This hospital is another strong performer against its peers, as it also ranks in the 95th percentile on Definitive Healthcare’s financial strength dashboard.

Rounding out the top three is Medical City Dallas in Dallas, Texas. This facility has an NPR of more than $1.2 billion and has seen its NPR grow 13.2% since its previously reported financial year. This facility also ranks in the 95th percentile on Definitive Healthcare’s financial strength dashboard and is rated at the time of publishing as the Best Hospital in Texas by U.S. News and World Report.

How many HCA hospitals are in the United States?

Currently, HCA Healthcare operates 214 hospitals across 19 states and the United Kingdom, making it the largest health system in the country. However, HCA also operates hundreds of other healthcare organizations, such as ambulatory surgery centers, physician groups, imaging centers, and more.

From the graph, we can see that HCA operates more urgent care centers than any other type of healthcare facility, with 284 locations across the U.S. Imaging centers are just as numerous with 259 locations.

HCA Healthcare is currently the largest health system in the country by net patient revenue, number of hospitals, and total hospital square footage. As a result, HCA has had a significant influence on healthcare in the U.S. for the last several years.
