Based in Nashville, TN, HCA Healthcare is one of the largest health systems, or IDNs, in the United States. Health systems, also referred to as integrated delivery networks (IDNs), are networks of providers and care facilities that are formed with the goal of improving clinical and quality performance.
With nearly 40,000 staffed beds covering a CBSA population of 1,903,045 people, this health system is not only large, but also financially strong. According to Definitive Healthcare's Hospitals and IDN platform, HCA's net patient revenue is $39 billion, which lands them in the 99th percentile. Perhaps this IDN's financial strength is a result of their payor mix, which tilts toward private payors like UnitedHealthcare (30.5 percent of total claims) and Humana (5.3 percent of total claims).

So far, it's been a busy year for HCA Healthcare. In February 2019, HCA Healthcare completed the purchase of Mission Health, a six-hospital system in Asheville and western North Carolina, for approximately $1.5 billion. Then, in May 2019, HCA Healthcare announced the release of its new Sepsis Prediction and Optimization of Therapy (SPOT) technology. SPOT, which uses the popular dog name because it sniffs out sepsis in a way humans cannot, is an algorithm and alert system for the early detection of sepsis and, so far, has helped save an estimated 8,000 lives in the last five years.
