Skilled nursing facilities with the highest slip and fall rates

A slip or a fall when you’re a kid might result in a bruise, maybe some soreness, but as you age, the incident can become very serious for your health and safety. According to the CDC, there were 3 million emergency department visits related to falls for older adults in 2020, and among adults over the age of 65, 36,000 falls resulted in death.

The healthcare costs for slips and falls are quite serious too, with the CDC reporting $50 billion in annual medical costs relating to these incidents. Even in healthcare facilities equipped to aid individuals who require help with mobility, such as skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), falls are not 100 percent preventable.

What insights do slip and fall data provide?

Knowing which healthcare facilities deal with higher percentages of patients experiencing falls resulting in injury can be a critical insight in identifying which facilities are most in need of products, services, or staff that help to prevent such incidents.

Facilities with higher percentages of fall incidents may point to a lack of resources, such as side rails for beds, grab rails in bathrooms, gait belts for extra support while walking, or other aids that assist in fall prevention.

Additionally, the data may point to facilities that lack the staffing needed to assist all patients when necessary. Unfortunately, the healthcare staffing shortage is putting strain on many healthcare facilities, including skilled nursing facilities. Higher percentages of falls could be a key indicator of facilities most impacted by the staffing shortages as they may lack the number of staff to provide either supervision or assistance to patients who need mobility guidance.
