Which California hospital has the most staffed beds?

The hospital with the most staffed beds in California is DHS - Metropolitan (Department of State Hospitals). This facility, located in Norwalk, California, has 1,004 staffed beds but only 583 patient discharges as of October 2022.

This low number of discharges may be because DSH - Metropolitan is a psychiatric hospital, designed to treat patients with severe mental health conditions. According to the facility’s website, this hospital serves patients who may be unable to provide food, clothing, or shelter for themselves. DSH -Metropolitan also treats people with mental health disorders who have been charged with a crime and are unable to defend themselves in a rational manner or understand court proceedings. Because of this, patients are very rarely discharged from the facility.

In second place is Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. One of the largest and most well-respected hospitals in the country, Cedars-Sinai has 882 staffed beds. According to the U.S News and World Report, Cedars-Sinai is currently ranked as the best hospital in California and the second-best hospital in the country. Cedar-Sinai Medical Center has significantly more discharges than any other hospital on the list. That is likely due to its high bed utilization rate (nearly 83%), its reputation as a top hospital, and its location in Los Angeles, the largest city in California with nearly 4 million residents.

Third place in our ranking is Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. They have 827 staffed beds and have also been awarded numerous accolades over the years.
