Top hospitals in Hawaii by net patient revenue

With nearly 1.5 million people calling Hawaii home, it is the 40th-most populous state in the United States. Hawaii has roughly 32 hospitals and 11 integrated delivery networks (IDNs), according to data from the Definitive Healthcare platform.

A key metric for measuring a hospital’s financial performance is net patient revenue (NPR), or the amount of money generated from patient services and collected from sources such as commercial insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare. Knowing a hospital’s NPR can influence your healthcare commercialization strategy, so we have compiled a list of the top 10 hospitals in Hawaii based on NPR using HospitalView to further examine the insights this data offers.

What Hawaii hospitals have the highest net patient revenue?

The Hawaii hospital with the highest net patient revenue is Queen’s Medical Center, with an NPR of $1.4 billion. This NPR is over three times higher than the next hospital on this list, a value explained by other metrics of this hospital, including its over 600 staffed beds and 30,000 patient discharges.

The Queen’s Medical Center is one of four hospitals that are a part of The Queen’s Health System. It received its name because it was founded in 1859 by Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV of Hawaii, and it is now the largest private, nonprofit hospital in Honolulu. The Queen’s Medical Center is ranked by U.S. News & World Reports as the top hospital in Hawaii and is nationally ranked in five adult specialties, making the top 15 for orthopedic care.

The hospital with the second highest NPR in Hawaii is Straub Medical Center, with an NPR of $537 million. This not-for-profit medical center is a part of the Hawaii Pacific Health IDN and includes a network of neighborhood clinics and a visiting specialist program that extends through Hawaii. Straub houses the only multi-disciplinary burn treatment unit in the Pacific Region and is fully accredited by The Joint Commission.

Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children has Hawaii’s third-highest net patient revenue, with an NPR of $437 million. The Kapiolani Maternity Home was built in 1890 by Queen Kapiolani, but in 1978, the hospital merged with Kaukikeolani Children’s Hospital, creating the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. Now, they are Hawaii’s leader in care for women, children, and infants and are a part of the Hawaii Pacific Health IDN. Specialty services at Kapiolani include 24-hour emergency pediatric care, intensive care for infants and children, high-risk perinatal care, maternal-fetal medicine, air transport, and women’s health services.
