Largest HCA physician groups in the U.S.

There are more than 2.7 million physicians in the U.S. according to the Definitive Healthcare PhysicianView product. Of this total, about 1.4 million are affiliated with a physician group.

What are physician groups?

A physician group is a group of one or more physicians who are operating together to provide patient care. Physician groups with one physician who owns and manages their own office are classified as a private practice. Groups with two or more physicians providing care within the same facility are classified as a group practice.

Group practices are often affiliated with a larger health system. Using the Definitive Healthcare PhysicianGroupView product, we have listed the largest physician groups in the U.S. that belong to the HCA Healthcare network (Definitive ID: 4710), the largest health system in the U.S. by number of member hospitals and the top IDN by net patient revenue.

The groups are ranked by the number of affiliated healthcare providers. Definitive Healthcare tracks the number of providers affiliated with physician groups based on data from Physician Compare and Definitive Healthcare proprietary research.

Which physician groups employ the most healthcare providers in the HCA network?

As of February 2026, the largest HCA physician group is HCA Florida Healthcare Physicians, with 9,190 affiliated healthcare providers. Spread across nearly 170 practice locations throughout Florida, this group also ranks among the largest U.S. physician groups by total membership and Medicare charges.

Following closely are HCA Florida Physicians with 1,126 affiliated healthcare providers and Mission Health Physicians in North Carolina with 1,058 affiliated providers. HCA Florida Physicians operates 47 locations across the east and west coasts of Florida, and likely shares many of the same physicians as HCA Florida Healthcare Physicians, as providers may be affiliated with more than one physician group in the practice area. Mission Health Physicians has 75 practice locations serving western North Carolina.

Florida and North Carolina rank in the top five U.S. states with the highest number of HCA hospitals. With higher numbers of HCA hospitals, it is no surprise that these areas also have physician groups with higher numbers of affiliated providers.

Why HCA physician group scale matters for commercial strategy

The scale of HCA physician groups matters because it shapes how life sciences companies and other players in the healthcare market engage providers. Understanding which groups have the most affiliated physicians, and in which specialties, can help commercial teams prioritize resources and design field strategies that improve reach and impact. In addition, recognizing overlapping affiliations, particularly in states with high HCA hospital density, ensures efforts are directed strategically rather than redundantly.

Beyond sheer size, the ownership structures and referral patterns within HCA groups matter. Some groups maintain centralized decision-making for clinical protocols or formulary preferences, while others are decentralized, with individual physicians making independent choices. Knowing which groups are centralized versus decentralized can help commercial teams design the right engagement strategies, ensuring meaningful engagement with the physicians who influence patient care the most.

Specialties represented within HCA physician groups

HCA physician groups cover a wide range of specialties, reflecting both the diversity of patient care and the footprint of the HCA network. Internal medicine and family practice dominate our list in terms of sheer numbers, anchoring primary care across high-density HCA markets like Florida, North Carolina, and Texas. These primary care providers often serve as referral hubs, influencing patient flow into specialty services and hospital-based care.

Emergency medicine is another heavily represented specialty on our list, with providers playing a key role in acute care pathways and influencing the adoption of hospital-based therapies and interventions. Other specialty areas—cardiology, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, radiology, neurology, and anesthesiology—are more concentrated but equally strategic, extending the network’s reach and capacity across the care continuum.
