Top hospitals in Missouri by net patient revenue

Missouri is the 18th most populous state, with 6.1 million people calling the “Show Me” state home. Missouri has 167 hospitals and 31 integrated delivery networks (IDNs), according to data from Definitive Healthcare.

What Missouri hospitals have the highest net patient revenue?

The Missouri hospital with the highest NPR is the Barnes-Jewish Hospital, which is located in the same city as the Gateway Arch: St. Louis. With an NPR exceeding $2.4 billion, The Barnes-Jewish Hospital brings in almost one billion more in revenue than the second-place hospital, likely thanks to its over 1,000 beds and 50,000 patient discharges, both metrics that far exceed the other top hospitals in Missouri.

The Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a part of the BJC HealthCare IDN, along with three other hospitals found in this top 25 list. It was named the number one hospital in Missouri by U.S. News & World Report and made the honor roll of best hospitals throughout the U.S. Nationally, this hospital is nationally ranked in 11 adult specialties, and its ear, nose, and throat care is ranked No. 10 in the nation. Additionally, the Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center is the only cancer center in Missouri to hold the Comprehensive Cancer Center designation from the National Cancer Institute.

The Children’s Mercy Adele Hall Campus is the hospital with the second-highest net patient revenue in Missouri, bringing in $1.4 billion annually. This campus houses the region’s highest-level NICU and the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in the region. The NPR of this hospital is accumulated through services provided through the surgical center, pediatric intensive care unit, in-patient care units, emergency room, medical imaging, and more than 30 outpatient clinics.

Finally, rounding out our top three is the Mercy Hospital St. Louis, with an NPR of $1.3 billion. It has been in St. Louis for over 150 years and is a CMS0 five-star hospital, Leapfrog Straight A hospital, and Top 50 Nation’s Best Hospital by Newsweek magazine. This hospital is part of the Mercy IDN, which is one of the largest in the U.S., with an associated 44 acute care and specialty hospitals and over 700 physician and outpatient clinics.

The total NPR of the top three Missouri hospitals—$5.2 billion—accounts for 26% of the NPR of the top 25 hospitals in Missouri. Furthermore, the top six hospitals in Missouri, ranked by NPR, all have annual revenues that exceed one billion.
