What hospitals in Oregon have the highest net patient revenue?

Portland, Oregon, is awash in high-quality hospitals, with six of our top 25 hospitals located in this city. Just these six hospitals bring in more than $6.2 billion in revenue.

The top hospital in Oregon, based on NPR, is the OHSU Hospital (Marquam Hill Campus), which is a part of the OHSU Partners IDN. This hospital’s NPR exceeds $2.5 billion and is more than 2.5 times higher than the second-place hospital, even with a similar number of beds and discharges. It ranks #42 on our list of top U.S. hospitals by net patient revenue.

The Marquam Hill Campus is OHSU’s largest location. In addition to the OHSU hospital, it also houses the Coernbecher Children’s Hospital, the Vollum Institute, and the Student Center.

In second place for top hospitals in Oregon is the Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, which has an NPR of $1 billion. It is a part of Providence in Oregon, which is a network of not-for-profit hospitals, physicians, health plans, clinics, and affiliated health services. It has been named one of the best 50 hospitals in America by Healthgrades for three years in a row.

Finally, there’s the Legacy Emanual Medical Center, with an NPR of $983 million. Interestingly, this hospital has only 388 beds—over a hundred less than the hospitals in spots one and two—but twice as many discharges. This data suggests that the Legacy Emanual Medical Center may see more short-term or even same-day care and procedures, allowing them to discharge more patients even with fewer beds.

Using NPR to understand the market size in Oregon

NPR is a valuable financial metric as it provides the revenue seen from patient services collected by private insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare. The NPRs of Oregon hospitals show the size of the healthcare market in Oregon and can help when making a commercialization strategy.

Additionally, looking at the location of top-rating hospitals, based on NPR, can help when aligning sales territories. For instance, six of the top hospitals in Oregon are in Portland and, combined, bring in over $6.2 million in revenue.
