Top renal dialysis clinics by region for CKD and ESRD care

Renal dialysis clinics play a crucial role in the treatment of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The primary purpose of renal dialysis is to perform the functions of the kidneys artificially when they are no longer able to function effectively on their own. Dialysis helps remove waste products and excess fluids from the blood.

Using data from our Atlas All-Payor Claims and ClinicView data products, we’ve compiled a list of the top U.S. renal dialysis clinics for CKD and ESRD care, broken down by U.S. region. The charts below include the percentage of total procedures performed at each active renal dialysis clinic by region and the integrated delivery network (IDN) of which they are a part. We derived this analysis by using calendar year 2023 claims through the end of October.

Which U.S. renal dialysis clinics perform the most procedures?

According to our data, the IDNs whose renal dialysis centers make up the largest share of the renal dialysis market in the U.S. are Fresenius Kidney Care (AKA Fresenius Medical Care), DaVita Kidney Care, and US Renal Care. Together they make up 91% of the U.S. market based on the percentage of procedures performed, with Fresenius performing the most at 57%.

While these networks perform the most procedures across the nation, variations exist based on the region of the country. The largest renal dialysis clinic in the Northeast is Concerto Renal Services – in Baltimore Maryland, with 1% of procedures performed. The next four slots are occupied by two Fresenius Kidney Care clinics and two New York City-based clinics, Rogosin East Side Dialysis and Island Rehabilitative Services – Queens, which are a part of smaller NYC-based IDNs: Rogosin Institute and Island Rehabilitative Services, respectively.

In the Southeast and Southwest, Fresenius Kidney Care dominates, with the top five clinics in the region affiliated with this IDN. As a whole, Fresenius makes up 65% of the Southeast market and 57% of the Southwest.

The largest five clinics in the Midwest consist of a mix of Concerto Renal Services and Fresenius Kidney Care clinics. The largest renal dialysis clinic in the Midwest is Concerto Renal Services – Crestwood in Illinois with 1.9% of procedures performed.

Lastly, the largest renal dialysis clinic in the West is Liberty Dialysis – Sullivan, based in Hawaii. While under a different name, Liberty Dialysis clinics are also a part of the Fresenius Kidney Care network. These clinics were acquired by Fresenius back in 2012 and the majority based in Hawaii have kept the Liberty name.

How do renal dialysis clinics serve patients with CKD and ESRD?

There are two main types of dialysis provided by renal dialysis clinics: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

In hemodialysis, a patient’s blood is circulated through a machine called a dialyzer, which acts as an artificial kidney. The dialyzer filters out waste products and excess fluids from the blood. Hemodialysis is typically performed in sessions that last several hours and is usually done three times a week.

Peritoneal dialysis involves using the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum) as a natural filter. A cleansing fluid (dialysate) is introduced into the abdomen, and waste products and excess fluids pass from the blood vessels in the peritoneum into the dialysate. Peritoneal dialysis can be done more frequently, and some patients perform the procedure at home every day or multiple times a day.

In addition to dialysis, renal dialysis clinics monitor patients’ vital signs and provide professional support during the dialysis process, ensuring safety and effectiveness. They play a vital role in educating patients about their condition, the importance of adhering to treatment plans, and dietary and lifestyle modifications. They can also be a source of emotional support and provide counseling services to help patients cope with the psychological aspects of their condition.
