Top 25 IDNs in Texas with the most hospitals

Texas is the second-most populous state in the U.S. and home to a large number of health systems. It’s also one of the largest and fastest-growing healthcare markets in the U.S., with a highly fragmented but rapidly consolidating provider landscape.

According to Definitive Healthcare data, as of January 2025, the state is home to 79 integrated delivery networks (IDNs), which collectively serve the diverse and expansive population across its vast landscape. Organizations working within or selling into healthcare can use this information to assess market power, competitive dynamics, and expansion opportunities. While there are advantages to targeting individual facilities, IDNs can represent large business opportunities based on the number of member facilities they feature.

Below is a list of the largest IDNs in Texas, ranked by the number of member hospitals in their networks.

Which Texas health system has the most hospitals?

Tenet Healthcare, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is the largest Texas health system on our list, with 79 hospitals and about $13.4 billion in net patient revenue. Tenet’s service area spans multiple states, with a strong presence in Texas, and it competes in both urban and suburban markets, offering a range of services across acute care, ambulatory surgery centers, and urgent care. As a for-profit hospital system, Tenet is owned by investors and operates with a focus on profit generation, which shapes its operational strategies.

Baylor Scott & White Health, also based in Dallas, Texas, is a non-profit health system with 54 hospitals and nearly $10.7 billion in net patient revenue. The system is a major player in Texas, providing comprehensive services across the state, including highly specialized care in areas such as cancer, heart disease, and orthopedics.

CHRISTUS Health, headquartered in Irving, Texas, is a Catholic non-profit health system with 39 hospitals and approximately $6.9 billion in net patient revenue. Its primary service area is centered in Texas, with additional facilities in Louisiana and other parts of the U.S., as well as some international locations.

What is a health system?

A health system is a healthcare organization that owns and manages a network of healthcare facilities. Most health systems consist of both inpatient and outpatient facilities, helping them provide a wide variety of comprehensive medical care.

What is an IDN?

An integrated delivery network (IDN) is another term for a health system.

Definitive Healthcare determines hospitals’ affiliations with parent IDNs through proprietary research, include thrice-yearly network confirmations, routine phone surveys, and daily tracking of news publications related to mergers, acquisitions, affiliations, and partnerships.

What makes up the “number of hospitals” metric?

In the Definitive Healthcare platform, the “number of hospitals” metric calculates the total hospitals an IDN has under its organization. This metric can help indicate the size of an IDN. Though, it’s worth noting that the number of member hospitals alone does not determine the size of an IDN since health systems are also comprised of ASCs, imaging centers, physician groups, and more.
