Top 20 physician groups using a MEDITECH EHR

Physician groups leverage electronic health records (EHRs) as a digital record of a patient’s paper chart to help track a patient through their care journey.

Unlike hospitals and larger healthcare facilities, physician groups primarily rely on ambulatory EHR software as they’re designed specifically to meet the needs of small physician practices and outpatient centers.

Below we explore the largest physician groups in the US that use a MEDITECH EHR.

What is the largest physician group using a MEDITECH EHR?

HCA Florida Physician is the largest physician group that uses a MEDITECH ambulatory EHR, with more than 2,500 physicians who are part of the group. HCA Florida Physicians is significantly larger than the physician group that takes second place, Avera Health Physicians, who has just a third of the number of physicians. Rounding out the top three is Sunrise Health Physicians with 739 physicians.

The physician groups that leverage MEDITECH as their ambulatory EHR have a range of specialties, from internal medicine to cardiology to obstetrics/gynecology. Family practice is the most common specialty for physician groups using a MEDITECH EHR, as more than half of the physician groups on the list specialize in family medicine.

MEDITECH vs Epic

Epic dominates the ambulatory EHR market with just over 41% market share. Meanwhile, MEDITECH ranks third with over 13% of the market.  In second place is Oracle Cerner, with 23% of the market.

MEDITECH works with much smaller physician groups compared to  Epic. The majority of physician groups on this list have fewer than 300 physicians while the top physician groups using an Epic EHR all had more than 2,500 physicians.

What is an ambulatory EHR?

An ambulatory EHR is a software designed primarily for outpatient centers and small physician practices, where patient visits do not include an overnight stay. EHRs capture data on a patient such as diagnoses, medical history, demographics, medications, immunizations, lab results, vitals notes and more. This data can be shared amongst healthcare providers to better coordinate care.

Ambulatory EHRs tend to be less complex than inpatient EHRs and have different certification criteria that are more focused on patient-centric features.
