What is a consumable medical device?

A consumable medical device is a piece of single-use medical equipment that healthcare providers use in hospital and surgical settings.  

Consumable medical devices include: 

  • IV tubing 
  • Single-use widgets 
  • Drug delivery 
  • Needleless connectors  

The FDA must issue 510k approval under Device Class 2 for consumable medical devices before use.  

Why are consumable medical devices important to healthcare?

Consumable medical devices are important to healthcare because they assist and facilitate many critical surgical procedures. Physicians and surgeons are better able to perform these procedures with the devices, leading to better patient care.
