Top 10 hospitals by epilepsy and seizure diagnoses

Epilepsy and the seizures that accompany the disease are the fourth most common neurological disorder in the world, with one in 26 being diagnosed with epilepsy in their lifetime. Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes recurring, unprovoked seizures. A seizure is a sudden surge of abnormal and excessive electrical activity in the brain. If untreated, seizures and epilepsy can be life-threatening.

Using Definitive Healthcare’s Atlas All-Payor Claims data, we created a list of the top 10 hospitals with the most epilepsy and seizure diagnoses. This data represents the percentage of patients in the U.S. with epilepsy or seizure diagnoses for the full year of 2022.

Which hospitals have the most epilepsy and seizure visits?

The hospital with the most epilepsy and seizure visits is Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, located in Cleveland, Ohio. This hospital is one of the largest in the country and accounts for 2% of all epilepsy and seizure diagnoses in the country. Cleveland Clinic is home to the Epilepsy Center, one of the largest facilities in the world that specializes in this disease, likely accounting for the facility taking the top spot.

The hospital with the second most epilepsy and seizure visits is University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This facility is a part of the University of Michigan health system and accounts for 1.3% of all epilepsy and seizure diagnoses in the U.S. It is also ranked as the number one hospital in the state by U.S. News and World Report as well as a top healthcare destination by Newsweek.

Boston Children’s Hospital has been ranked as the number one children’s hospital in the country by U.S. News and World Report for the last nine consecutive years, and also ranks in the top 10 for every pediatric specialty.

What is neurology? And why is it important to healthcare?

When patients visit a hospital for epilepsy or seizures, they will most likely speak with a neurologist. A neurologist is someone who studies disorders of the nervous system, which consists of the brain, muscles, blood vessels, and nerves. A neurologist will often treat these disorders with surgery.

Neurology is important to healthcare because people who study the field can help treat diseases affecting the nervous system. This treatment helps to improve the quality of life of patients and their loved ones.
