Top 10 hospitals by epilepsy and seizure diagnoses

Epilepsy is a complex neurological disorder with a diverse treatment landscape that spans antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), neuromodulation therapies, and surgical interventions. As the range of available therapies expands, visibility into where and how epilepsy is being diagnosed and treated is critical for understanding market dynamics and identifying regional variation in care delivery.

By analyzing claims data, organizations can gain insights into diagnosis volumes and treatment patterns, revealing both the prevalence of epilepsy and the gaps in care across different regions. This data provides a clear picture of where high volumes of epilepsy cases are being managed, helping to identify key institutions and referral networks that are critical in delivering care to these patients.

Using Definitive Healthcare’s Atlas All-Payor Claims data, we created a list of the top 10 hospitals with the most epilepsy and seizure diagnoses. This data represents the percentage of patients in the U.S. with epilepsy or seizure diagnoses for the full year of 2024.

According to data from Definitive Healthcare’s Atlas All-Payor Claims database, Cleveland Clinic Main Campus in Cleveland, Ohio, recorded the highest percentage of epilepsy and seizure-related claims in 2024, accounting for 3.06% of all such diagnoses nationwide. As home to one of the world’s largest and most advanced epilepsy centers, it’s no surprise this leading institution tops the list.

Coming in second is Cincinnati Children’s Burnet Campus in Cincinnati, Ohio, with 1.84% of all epilepsy and seizure claims. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is ranked among the top pediatric centers in the U.S., one of only two hospitals nationwide to place in the top 10 across all 10 specialties, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Boston Children’s Hospital ranks third on our list, with 1.78% of national claims. As one of the most prestigious pediatric hospitals in the country, Boston Children’s has earned top rankings across all pediatric specialties and has been named the #1 children’s hospital in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report.

Interestingly, five of the top 10 hospitals for epilepsy and seizure-related visits are children’s hospitals. However, when looking at overall claim volume by facility type, children’s hospitals account for only 11% of all epilepsy-related visits, compared to 81% for short-term acute care hospitals. This suggests a relatively small number of specialized pediatric institutions are managing a disproportionately large share of pediatric epilepsy and seizure cases.

In contrast, epilepsy and seizure-related care at short-term acute care hospitals appears more dispersed. This highlights how specialized pediatric epilepsy care is centralized in institutions with the expertise and infrastructure to treat these complex conditions.

Understanding high-volume epilepsy centers

This data sheds light on where epilepsy diagnoses are most concentrated, revealing not just the locations but also the institutional capabilities driving that concentration. Whether you’re focusing on drug development, device innovation, or clinical research, understanding the facilities that see the highest numbers of epilepsy cases can point to regions and institutions that are critical to your strategic initiatives, from clinical trial site selection to optimizing market access and establishing targeted partnerships to ultimately improve treatment for epilepsy patients.
