Short-Term Acute Care Hospital (STAC)

What is a short-term acute care hospital?

A short-term acute care (STAC) hospital is a medical center specializing in the short-term medical treatment of patients. In the U.S., STAC hospitals are the most common type of hospital, accounting for around half of the hospitals.

STAC hospitals accommodate short inpatient stays and outpatient care as well.

Many healthcare providers work in STAC hospitals, including physicians, registered nurses and nurse practitioners.

Why are short-term acute care hospitals important to healthcare?

Short-term acute care hospitals are important because they offer critical healthcare services to patients. In particular, they provide surgery and treatment for urgent illnesses and injuries. These services can help improve quality of care and patient outcomes.
