Top 10 hospitals with the most leukemia and lymphoma diagnoses

Leukemia and lymphoma are the two most prevalent types of blood cancer in the U.S. Leukemia affects the blood and bone marrow, while lymphoma specifically impacts a patient’s lymph nodes.

In the United States, approximately 437,000 people are living with or in remission from leukemia. In comparison, 879,000 people are living with or in remission from lymphoma. The prevalence of leukemia and lymphoma in the U.S. equals approximately 1,316,000 patients.

Using the Definitive Healthcare Atlas All-Payor Claims, we have compiled lists of the top 10 U.S. hospitals with the most diagnoses of leukemia and lymphoma in 2022.

Which hospitals have the most leukemia diagnoses?

The top leukemia hospital by diagnoses last year was Helford Clinical Research Hospital, which accounted for 4.8% of all leukemia diagnoses in the U.S. The Helford Clinical Research Hospital is one of the major facilities with the City of Hope, which is recognized by the U.S. New & World Report as a top 10 cancer treatment centers in 2022 and 2023.

The hospital accounting for the next highest percent of leukemia diagnoses is Moffitt Cancer Center with 4.4% of all diagnoses. Moffitt Cancer Center is one of two facilities in Florida to be designated as a National Cancer Institute-Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Rounding out the top three hospitals with the highest percentage of leukemia diagnoses is Cleveland Clinic, which comprises of 2.8% of all diagnoses. Like, Helford Clinical Research Hospital, Cleveland Clinic is recognized as one of the top 10 cancer treatment centers in 2023.

These top three leukemia hospitals account for 12.0% of the total primary leukemia diagnoses in the U.S. The top 10 hospitals for leukemia diagnoses shown in Fig 1. account of 23.9%.

Which hospitals have the most lymphoma diagnoses?

The top lymphoma hospital by diagnoses last year was Moffitt Cancer Center, which accounted for 3.7% of all lymphoma diagnoses in the U.S.

The two hospitals tied for the second highest percent of lymphoma diagnoses are Cleveland Clinic and Stanford Hospital – each accounting for 3.4% of lymphoma diagnoses. U.S. News and World Report ranks Stanford Hospital as the 11th best cancer hospital in 2022, right after Cleveland Clinic, which comes in at 10th.

These top three hospitals account for 12.0% of the total primary lymphoma diagnoses in the U.S., while the top 10 hospitals shown in Fig 2. account for 23.6% of lymphoma diagnoses.

How are leukemia and lymphoma diagnosed?

While leukemia and lymphoma are both blood cancers, the methods for diagnoses are different. Leukemia is diagnosed via a complete blood count to identify abnormal white blood cell levels relative to red blood cells and platelets. Whereas lymphoma is diagnosed through a biopsy to test a small portion of tissues. Subsequent tests for confirmation and for second options may also be done.
