Fig. 1 Data sourced from the Definitive Healthcare Hospitals & IDNs database using ICD-10 codes containing “Malignant Neoplasm” on March 27, 2020.
The above Definitive Healthcare data shows that a fairly rare form of cancer, thyroid cancer, actually had the most reported number of claims in the year 2019. Reported by the Tampa General Hospital in Florida, this rare disease (fewer than 200,000 cases per year on average) had 836 total claims. The only other Florida location that made this list is AdventHealth Orlando with 271 claims for prostate cancer diagnoses — a much more common form of cancer.
It is also worth noting that the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center appears on this list five separate times. The most reported diagnosis from this particular location is bone metastasis with 622 claims, the second highest volume on this list. The Anderson Cancer Center takes the third ranking as well with 571 claims for peritoneal cancer, another more rare form of cancer.
