Top 10 immune globulin procedure codes

The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) subcategory Medicine - Immune Globulins (IG), Serum or Recombinant Products tracks injected medications that work to prevent infections, make infections less severe or strengthen the immune system, especially for those who are immunocompromised.

What are the most common immune globulin procedures?

Reviewing the IG, serum and recombinant product CPTs from the Definitive Healthcare ClaimsMx product, we break down the top codes from 2021.

The top IG procedure codes are for Rho(D) immune globulin (RHIG) (90384). According to Mayo Clinic, RHIG is generally used for three treatments: immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) for patients with Rh-positive blood, in pregnancy when a mother is Rh-negative and the baby is Rh-positive and to prevent antibodies from forming when a person with Rh-negative blood receives a transfusion with Rh-positive blood.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) monoclonal antibody recombinant (90378) prevents severe infection for high-risk patients. In the third and fourth spots are rabies immune globulin (RIB) treatments (90375, 90376) that help prevent infection after exposure to the virus.

In addition to treating and preventing specific types of infections, IG treatment also helps patients who are immunocompromised. In the ninth position on the list is immune globulin for intravenous use (IGIV), used by patients with rare conditions such as common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) and other primary immunodeficiencies.
