What types of specialists work with PCOS patients?
People living with PCOS usually have excessive levels of androgens, or male hormones, as well as insulin resistance. If left untreated, insulin resistance related to PCOS can result in type 2 diabetes.
Because PCOS is a condition predominantly caused by hormonal imbalance, most PCOS patients will be treated by endocrinologists—doctors who specialize in hormonal disorders. However, PCOS symptoms extend beyond the endocrine system and may include
- hair loss or excessive growth
- skin conditions, such as acne
- reproductive complications
- menstrual irregularity
- weight loss or gain
Due to the wide range of PCOS symptoms, patients may see a variety of specialists including dermatologists, gynecologists or reproductive specialists, and nutritionists
