Which Texas physician groups had the highest Medicare charges?

Texas Oncology reported the highest Medicare charges in 2020, with more than $3.1 billion in total charges. This Dallas-based oncology group has 829 physicians and more than 1,000 total practice members.
In second is Texas Health Physicians Group, with more than $1.6 billion in total Medicare charges. Based out of Arlington, this internal medicine-focused physician group counts more than 2,500 doctors among its membership.

Houston’s Renaissance Physician Organization takes third on our list, with more than $992 million in Medicare charges. Just more than 1,400 doctors are parts of this family practice group, which also specializes in internal medicine and ophthalmology

Ninety percent of the organizations on our list are categorized as single- or multi-specialty physician groups. University of Texas Physicians represents the only academic practice group on the list, while Patient Physician Network IPA is the sole independent practice association in the top 20, meaning it is owned by its member physicians, rather than another healthcare network or organization.

What are physician groups?

Physician groups are organizations comprising one or more doctors who provide coordinated care. They may be classified as private practices run by a single physician, or as group practices with two or more physicians delivering care in the same setting, and are often owned by health networks. In rarer cases, physician groups may be owned and operated by academic organizations or by the group’s member physicians.
