Top 10 skilled nursing facility corporations by net patient revenue

Skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) provide long-term care to our ever-aging population. They are instrumental in the delivery of cost-effective, quality care for the elderly segment of the U.S. population.

Definitive Healthcare’s LongTermCareView database tracks nearly 2,000 skilled nursing facility corporations and more than 18,000 individual skilled nursing facilities.

Using Definitive Healthcare data, we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 largest skilled nursing facilities by net patient revenue (NPR).

What are the largest skilled nursing companies?

Providence Administrative Consulting Services ranks first on our list with an NPR of more than $4.2 billion, according to the most recent Medicare Cost Report release. From our database, they have more than 280 SNFs and 30 assisted living facilities within their network.

In second is The Ensign Group, in California. It has an NPR of about $4 billion. It has more than 300 SNFs and more than 30 ALFs in its network.

Finally, Genesis Healthcare ranks third on our list. Located in Pennsylvania, it has an NPR of about $2.3 billion. According to our database, Genesis Healthcare has more than 200 SNFs and more than 20 ALFs in its network.

Collectively, the top 10 SNF corporations have more than $20billion in net patient revenue. Of the 1,800 corporations reporting NPR in August 2023, the average is about $77 million.

How does a nursing home differ from a skilled nursing facility?

Long term skilled nursing facilities and nursing homes differ primarily in that SNFs are covered by Medicare (for a period of time), but nursing homes are not. Furthermore, skilled nursing care is intended to help patients undergoing rehabilitative or medical treatment, while nursing homes provide a permanent residence for elderly individuals needing 24/7 care.
