Which type of hospital generates the most revenue in cities?
Based on these rankings, it's clear that there are a few types of hospitals that generate the highest amount of net patient revenue:
- Children's hospitals: The billions of dollars flowing through children’s hospitals every year pay for the care of thousands of children, many of them extremely sick or suffering from chronic conditions requiring a lifetime of treatment. Hospital officials say costs are high because the care is complicated, and the technology is expensive. In addition, the hospitals help fund research into the causes and treatment of diseases.
- Teaching hospitals: Affiliated with medical schools and associated with high costs, teaching hospitals are the training grounds for the next generation of physicians. The reason for the expense? Not only does Medicare pay teaching hospitals more, to compensate them for their educational mission, but also these hospitals command higher prices in the commercial market due to the medical-school affiliation.
- Cancer centers: Cancer treatments can be costly due to expensive drugs, cutting-edge treatments, the necessity for experienced doctors with high salaries, and lengthy hospital stays.
