Which physician procedure had the most charges in Florida?

In 2021, the physician procedure with the highest charges in Florida was an unlisted dialysis procedure. In significant lead over the other procedures, it had 16.5% of total charges. Dialysis procedures may account for more charges because they are costly. Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) are reported to have 33x higher monthly spending than patients without ESKD.

Coming in next was an emergency department visit with high medical decision-making, with 4.1% in total charges. This code describes the evaluation and management of a patient within the emergency department using a high level of medical decision-making. In addition, it also involves a comprehensive history and a comprehensive examination.

In third was an emergency department visit with moderate medical decision-making, with 2.7% in total charges. Like the second code, this code describes the evaluation and management of an emergency department patient, but it involves using a moderate level of medical decision-making.

How are medical charges captured?

Healthcare providers capture medical charges by converting claims from patient services into charges to generate revenue. Oftentimes, healthcare organizations use EHR systems to capture charges. Accurate reporting is necessary to avoid revenue leakage and audits.
